A Search Engine is a software tool designed to help people find relevant information on the Internet. They can be used to find websites, images and other types of file. They are important as they will enable people using the Internet to find your website.

Basically a Search Engine works by responding to queries or searches put into it. If, for instance, I am looking for a local petshop I might type in the words or phrase, "Petshop Swansea" I want the Search Engine to return results of Petshops in Swansea. It will o do this by searching through the information it has stored on each website that has been submitted to it. Depending on which Search Engine people use this information is gathered by human input or more commonly a web crawler also sometimes referred to as a spider. Information about the website will then be stored for use in future searches.

Once a web crawler has searched a website then the contents of that page are analyzed to determine how that website should be stored this is sometimes known or referred to as a Ranking Algorithm.  The analyzing is the clever part of Seach Engines and the part they keep secret from the public in order to stop people manipulating the results. 

It is this Ranking Algorithm they use to decide on the Search Engine Position of a website (the ranking of a website means where the website appears in the search results, the higher the better!)
