PAPER SIZES

Paper sizes can cause some confusion so for your convenience we have produced a Clear Images guide to paper sizes.

Today, there are two widespread standard paper sizes, the Northern American standard, and the one we use in the UK, ISO216 or International Paper Size Standard.

The unique quality of the International Standard is its scalability, the base format is A0 which is a sheet of paper measuring 1 Metre Square in Area. A1, A2, A3 and so forth are defined by halving the preceding paper size parallel to its shorter side.

The most common used size is A4 (210x297mm) the base format is a sheet of paper measuring 1 m² in area (A0 paper size). Successive paper sizes in the series A1, A2, A3, and so forth, are defined by halving the preceding paper size parallel to its shorter side. The most frequently used paper size is A4 (210 × 297 mm). An advantage is that standard A4 sheets made from 80 grams/m² (or gsm) paper weighs 5 grams, allowing one to know the weight - and associated postage rate - by counting the number of sheets used.

Below in the paper size chart you will see three series A, B and C. A refers to paper and is the most commonoy seen today. B is for series which provides intermediate sizes for the A series but this is rarely used. C is for Envelopes. The two most common Envelope sizes are DL which is designed to take an A4 Sheet folded twice and a C4 which takes a flat unfolded sheet of A4.

  • B0 - 1000mm x 1414mm
  • B1 - 707mm x 1000mm
  • B2 - 500mm x 707mm
  • B3 - 353mm x 500mm
  • B4 - 250mm x 353mm
  • B5 - 176mm x 250mm
  • B6 - 125mm x 176mm
  • B7 - 88mm x 125mm
  • B8 - 62mm x 88mm
  • B9 - 44mm x 62mm
  • B10 - 31mm x 44mm

  • C0 - 917mm x 1297mm
  • C1 - 648mm x 917mm
  • C2 - 458mm x 648mm
